Maggiolina: a mural bridging art and neighborhood

Published: 20 December 2023

In the heart of Milan’s Maggiolina neighborhood, a captivating project unfolds as artist Ufocinque (Matteo Capobianco) brings to life a mural on the wall of the “Scuola dell’Infanzia” along Via Ragusa. Supported by the Milan Community Foundation and the Claudio De Albertis Foundation, this endeavor is part of the larger “A Name in Every Neighborhood” initiative by Milan Public Art and YesMilano. Collaborating with students from the “Scuola dell’Infanzia Ragusa,” the mural offers a unique portrayal of Maggiolina, blending reality and imagination.

Ufocinque, a distinguished figure in Italian and European street art, is the artistic force behind this project. Trained in Industrial Design at the Polytechnic University of Milan, he is acclaimed for seamlessly merging design and theatrical scenography, employing the paper cut technique to create visually arresting street art across Europe.

This initiative is not isolated; Milan Public Art and YesMilano have successfully implemented the “A Name in Every Neighborhood” project in various Milanese districts. From Bovisa to Gorla, local communities have actively contributed to crafting artworks that celebrate their distinct identity.

In essence, the Maggiolina mural stands as a testament to how art intertwines with communities, narrating stories and safeguarding the essence of places and people. It showcases the potential of art to be a potent force in commemorating diversity and fostering a profound sense of community belonging.
